OUR BELIEFS

At Long’s Chapel, we worship the one and only triune God we know as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  We believe God created the universe and all that is in it. We believe God is both sovereign (all-powerful) and loving and that we can know and experience God’s love in our life.

In addition to our core beliefs as Christians, we celebrate our vibrant heritage a Wesleyan Church. The Wesleyan Church, or Methodism, began as an English movement led by John Wesley (1703-1791) to strengthen the Church by inviting people to take their faith and put it into action.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day, he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the Father's right hand, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic (universal) Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Long's Chapel is an Independent Methodist Church.

Our Spiritual DNA follows Jesus in the way of John Wesley, an 18th Century English Minister who was bold about encouraging folks to worship God, connect through small groups, and put faith into action to change the world with God's love.

Our Spiritual DNA:

  • The General Rules - John Wesley had 3 "simple" rules that governed life. A) Do no harm B) Do good C) Stay connected to God's love

  • Discernment of God's Will

  • The Methodist Quadrilateral

The Methodist Quadrilateral

Methodists traditionally use a fourfold approach to learn about our Christian faith and apply it to contemporary issues and our Christian practice:

  1. Scripture We seek to discover the word of God through reading the Bible. There are different understandings among Methodists about the Bible's authority in our lives. We need to use resources like different Bible translations, commentaries, and Bible reading notes.

  2. Tradition This is the wisdom and creativity of Christians over time and across the world. It includes inspirational material like hymns, songs, prayers, poetry, Christian art, and devotional books. There are also formally agreed teachings like the creeds and church teaching.

  3. Reason We are called to love God with our minds as well as with our hearts. To the best of our ability, we need to think things through in the light of reason. This means becoming aware of different points of view and using our own critical thinking to make sense of God's world.

  4. Experience Methodism particularly stresses the importance of our own experience of God's grace working in our lives. We gain wisdom and maturity from life experience, especially when we pray and reflect on our story with other Christians.
