I had some work done on one of our cars last week. We use several local mechanics for different cars in our family. This guy is in Canton and he is great. The car had a bad smell filling the cabin and I knew something was wrong but we let it go for several weeks cause it wasn’t affecting the performance of the car. Come to find out there was a little cover (a cap) that had come off part of the motor. According to the mechanic, it’s a really cheap part and there’s not much to it. The problem is that the lack of that cap allowed spillage that has caused some other problems in the engine. The fix was cheap, but the damage was expensive.
So often in life, friends, we find ourselves wrestling with the same situation. God gives us a map through the Word and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This wisdom is timeless, instructive and most of all, for our wellbeing. And yet often, we choose to go our own way. I can hear Him through the mechanic when he says, “You know, the price to fix this has already been paid - but the damage that it’s caused - well that’s going to be extensive and expensive.”
Think with me about how greed, lust, pride, and the like - run away with us and cause us to easily point out the speck of dust in our neighbor’s eye while all the while, ignoring the plank in our own. Remember, God is good and His mercy endures forever.
What if. . . I could go back in a time machine to a few weeks ago, when I first noticed that smell, I would have had it diagnosed and got the cap replaced. It would have been a simple and inexpensive fix with minimal damage. Truth is, God gives us that power. He gives us new life and a chance. In this season of Advent, make space and room for God’s Spirit to work.
- Listen to your heart.
- Listen for the voice of God that is FOR you, never AGAINST you.
- Watch for the “check engine” lights and take them seriously.
- Remember - “Be still and know that I am God.”
This Advent, we are studying and praying together about how to make room for Jesus. Let’s do that - together!!!!
