The Open Door Ministries is a mission of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church of Lake Junaluska, North Carolina.  The purpose of the Open Door Ministries is to feed the hungry, assist those in need, and to provide a safe Christian environment that offers Christ-centered educational programs and assistance to everyone.  Those who enter the Open Door encounter the love of Christ offered by dedicated staff and volunteers.  The ministry gives renewed hope to people and transforms lives through the gospel of Jesus Christ. 

Programs offered by The Open Door Ministries:

  • Meals:  Provided seven days a week.
  • Food Boxes:  Available upon request during normal business hours.
  • New Beginnings:  Clothing assistance for a new job.
  • Emergency Shelter & Heating Assistance:  Provided with approval by Director.
  • Showers:  Men & Women showers are available to anyone upon request during office hours.  Staff will provide a loaner shower bag that contains soap, shampoo, & towels.
  • Bible Study:  Tues. 10:30 – 11:30 am.
  • Faithful Friends:  Thurs. 11:30 am – 1 pm. Ministry for ex-inmates and/or families.
  • Saturday Worship Service:  6:00 pm; dinner follows service provided by churches in the county.
  • Sunday Worship Service:  6:00 pm; dinner follows service.  

Although the Open Door Ministries is a mission of Long’s Chapel, it is supported by many community churches, organizations, and individuals.  Churches of all denominations provide physical resources and volunteers.  Organizations throughout Haywood County provide donations of foodstuffs, materials, and services.  However, it is the individual volunteers who cook and serve the meals and perform countless acts of service that allows the Open Door to carry out its service to the community. 

The Open Door Ministries is governed by a Board of Directors who provide guidance to the operational Directors Perry & JoAnn Hines.  The Ministry consists of two primary components, the Soup Kitchen and the Second Blessing Thrift Shop.
