Information and Ideas for the Lenten 2008 Service Project

As your group discusses a service project to help support the mission team going to Kenya, please note some definite needs.  While much of the assistance required is simply monetary, requiring fund-raising on your group’s part, there are some physical needs that can also be met.  Those are:

-          Transportation to and from the Atlanta airport.  This may mean raising money to charter a bus or providing drivers and cars to caravan.

-          Vacation Bible School supplies – contact Leah Mehaffey 456-3993 x34 for specific lists of items needed, or preparing specific craft items to be used.

As you plan, please think of ways to reach out to the greater community and not only within the congregation.  We want to reach out to Haywood County for a bigger return on our efforts, to bring an awareness of the need in Africa, and to offer an opportunity for others to give.

Long’s Chapel has a strict policy about fund-raising.  The Fund Raiser Policy will give you guidelines and procedures to help in your planning.  It is acceptable to hold an after-church luncheon, spaghetti dinner, rummage sale, car wash, or auction for example, provided a Facility Use Form is submitted and the space is available. If you need assistance with this process, or completing these forms, please contact Leslie Butters at 400-0486.  Remember, no items or tickets may be sold on Sunday.  Bulletin announcements or verbal announcements may give directions on how these items may be purchased.

Some items noted in the Discussion Guide simply cannot be shipped (e.g. tools, small toys, etc.) and will require funds to purchase.  All monies need to be deposited to Long’s Chapel UMC, name of the fund Lent Small Group Kenya Mission clearly noted.

If you have any questions about your service project, call Leslie Butters at 400-0486.
