Disaster Relief
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the not-for-profit humanitarian agency of The United Methodist Church and serves as the primary channel for disaster relief. UMCOR provides relief in disaster areas, aids refugees, and confronts the challenge of world hunger and poverty. UMCOR responds to a range of emergencies: war and civil strife, outbreaks of cholera, fire. famine, and natural disasters. When an emergency ends, recovery work begins, and UMCOR continues its ministry long after media attention and public interest have faded. Periodically, Long’s Chapel holds special offerings for UMCOR for disaster relief.
To ensure the availability of supplies in local emergencies, the WNC Conference maintains the Mission Response Center (MRC), in Mooresville, NC. The MRC is the warehouse for disaster relief supplies. Throughout the year, groups at Long’s Chapel purchase supplies for and assemble Health Kits and Flood Buckets for times of disaster. These kits are either taken directly to the scene or shipped through the Missions Response Center. We also send teams regularly to help sort and pack supplies to areas in need.
Materials and supplies from the MRC are used by WNC Conference Building Teams which work to repair, rebuild, or build new churches and homes in areas of disaster.
