Meet The Pastor
Dr. Charles William Wilson, II, was born in Ozark, Alabama, on October 20, 1955. He was the second of two children born to Dr. & Mrs. Charles William Wilson, a Mathematics Professor and University Librarian. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Chuck served three years as the Director of Youth Ministries at the First UMC of Waco, Texas. During this time, he developed a great love for youth and collegians.
Chuck was ordained in 1982 in the Central Texas Conference of the UMC. His seminary training took place at Perkins School of Theology and Fuller Theological Seminary and he received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Emory University, Candler School of Theology.
Upon completion of his seminary work, Chuck returned to the First UMC of Waco, Texas. After the birth of his two sons, Chuck began to feel removed from his family who had retired to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Gratefully, he received an appointment to the Matthews UMC, Matthews, North Carolina. In July 1992, Chuck was appointed the Director of Congregational Development for the Western North Carolina Conference of The UMC. In February 1996, Chuck was appointed as Pastor of the University City Church, a vibrant, vital church in northeast Charlotte. In June 2001, Chuck was appointed to serve as Pastor of the Wesley Memorial UMC in High Point. This community cathedral experienced transforming vitality and became an authentic model of an ancient/future church. In June 2007, Chuck was appointed to a year of Sabbatical Leave.
Chuck has served on the Conference Council on Youth Ministry, (Central Texas Conference), Board of Directors for the Laura Edwards Children’s Center, Program Director of the Wesley Foundation at Baylor University, Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Communities and Schools and the YMCA as well as serving on the Board of Trustees of High Point University. He also chaired for several years the Commission on Church Related Colleges and Universities.
Chuck is a husband/dad/preacher/pastor/writer. He and his wife, Karen, have four children, Chase, Ryan, Molly and MacKenzie. He loves a good joke, a genuine prayer, the crafted sermon, and a well-turned phrase. He is still amazed that God loves him and is very thankful for the life he knows.
Chuck has studied Clinical Pastoral Education at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, North Carolina, and is the author of several writing projects. They reflect his love for the local church and his desire for congregational vitality. The pieces include Your Church Can Be Warm and Friendly, Your Church Can Be On The Community Grapevine, Your Church Can Have A Future, Your Church Can Attract Visitors, and A Bridge Over Troubled Water; Keys to Wholistic Ministry, Nine Options for a Church in a Transitional Community, S.T.E.W.A.R.D., and Your Church Can Be Healthy. He is also the 1997 recipient of the Harry Denman Award in the Western North Carolina Conference. This award is given by the Foundation for Evangelism for outstanding leadership in evangelism ministry.
